Be Observant, Peaceful and Healthy – Slow Down

Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.
-Eddie Cantor

Have you ever taken a walk or a bike ride down a street that you usually drive? You probably noticed a lot more interesting things that you normally miss. How observant we are correlates negatively with our speed. Have you ever noticed that the only time you lose your keys is when you’re in a …

Desiderata Series

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
-Max Ehrmann

In lieu of my daily reflection at this site today, I have written a post for every, every minute. I have been given the honor of kicking off the Desiderata series. Bob at every, every minute has a remarkable appreciation for life that shows through in his posts. His writing never fails to move me …

Avoiding Addictive Behaviors

You do anything long enough to escape the habit of living until the escape becomes the habit
-David Ryan

This past Sunday, I posted 10 Ways to Find Time for Inspiration. This post expands on #3: Avoid addictive behaviors. Television, video games and drinking or other drug use are a few things that some of us can get carried away with. Hours or days can pass by in what seems to be a blink …

Natural Inspiration

Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.
-Edward Abbey

When we think of the topic of inspiration, we often think of beautiful scenery, waterfalls, mountains, streams, etc. It is our natural environment and it is aligned with inspiration. The world we live in is defined by boundaries: yard boundaries, fences, walls, gardens with defined borders, paths with clear edges, international borders. Most of us …

Stress or Adventure? You Decide

We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.
-H. G. Wells

Does This Sound Like a Typical Day? You get up just early enough to use the toilet, shower, shave, get dressed, groomed, wake up the kids, repeat the previous steps with them, grab something to eat, steal a sweaty kiss from the spouse, run out the door balancing a brief case, diaper bag, granola bar, …

How to Meditate Effectively

We could say that meditation doesn't have a reason or doesn't have a purpose. In this respect it's unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don't do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.
-Alan Watts

Meditation improves peace, wisdom, stress relief, spiritual growth, purpose, health, pain relief, intelligence and metabolism. Here is a guide to meditation.

Forgive Yourself and Find True Inspiration: Forgiveness, Part 4

The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbor as ourselves: we do unto others as we do unto ourselves. We hate others when we hate ourselves. We are tolerant toward others when we tolerate ourselves. We forgive others when we forgive ourselves. We are prone to sacrifice others when we are ready to sacrifice ourselves.
-Eric Hoffer

This is part 4 of a 4 part series on forgiveness. Part 4 in this series discusses forgiving yourself and finding peace with your past. The parts in this series are as follows: Why Should We Forgive? Building Deep, Meaningful Relationships Through Forgiveness Overcoming Trauma Through Forgiveness Forgive Yourself and Find True Inspiration It is …
