@Working - This is a difficult balance. As humble people, we don't want people to walk all over us. It is also a disservice to others for us to enable their non-humble behavior by allowing them to take credit for our work. Here are a couple ideas from one humility seeker to another:

Be conscious of your own intentions when you approach someone. Do it from a place of caring and humility rather than anger and defensiveness.

If you're too angry to be objective, give yourself time to cool off first.

Choose not to take their actions personally by realizing that their behaviors are a reflection of their own shortcomings and not yours.

Question their behavior with a curious mindset rather than a confrontational one. Say, "I noticed you did/said .... Are you aware that ....? I'm not comfortable with that." Rather than, "Why would you do .... That pisses me off!"

Practice patience. It is almost always the case that meaningful & valuable contributions are noticed in time.

I hope that helps.

I'm am very grateful for this site and have been working to achieve humility. My struggle is that I have been doing lots of charity work and can't stop feeling that I'm being taken advantage of. Others take credit for my work and this makes me sooo angry. I have decided not to call those folks on the fact because it would be petty, confrontational, and not humble. I'm guessing this is humility but are you supposed to let yourself be wronged by others and let it go? Or fight and stand up for yourself?

I enjoy reading the many messages posted above. I plan to keep reading and be part of it to keep up with the stress of daily living. By the way, I'm in my late 40's and I make reading spiritual materil as my main interest.

That was a very inspiring article, as I found it Googling for Inspiration. I've read and heard similar advice before, but the more one hears it, the more it sinks in.

@none - Yes I agree that the God of our definition may or may not exist. And yes, I agree that the defining characteristics of God as we know them today have been passed on from generation to generation for the benefit and convenience of those perpetuating the stories. I don't claim to know what God is or that God positively exists. If you read my post Does God Really Exist?, and the comments along with it, you'll get a good sense of what I am talking about when I say "God."
The truth is, my belief in God, and my understanding of the nature of God, are in constant flux. However, philosophically speaking, it is difficult to deny the presence of some higher cause to our consciousness and even our existence. What exactly the nature of that "higher cause" is, I have no intellectual idea. But the question I ask myself is this:
Am I better off believing and living as if God exists knowing that he may not, or am I better off believing God does not exists knowing that he may?

I've thought the same things you say here countless times. I'm glad at least some people realize these things, while the majority live like 2 legged beasts, strolling down the sidewalk with no meaning or self-conscience.

I remember reading many years ago a quote by Heraclitus, something like this:

Gods are mortal, men are immortal
Living their deaths, dying their lifes

Cheers.

All good with what you've said, but I have a little question:
What exactly is this God you are referring to at no 1 ?
You seem like an intelligent person. So I guess you can confirm objectively that gods are just inventions handed down from generation to generation between people and borrowed between cultures, to fill a void of not knowing the reason for being. Any serious historian can confirm that, you just have to stop giving so much importance to your particular culture to agree on that.
It seems to me that any particular god of any particular religion is just a random concept crafted to be used like some sort of rope you can cling to, instead of realizing that you don't know jack about existence and yourself.
This sincere feeling of not knowing, of mystery is in my opinion much more powerful and meaningful than accepting lies and half-truths just to sustain a belief in a certain deity and connect with others that entertain that same illusion.

I must point out that you should not interpret this reply as a hate speech. I have much respect for you,( this is why I'm still on this blog and I'll keep reading your posts.) But the way that people use this concept of God so often to mean literally anything, when truth be told it means nothing, never ceases to amaze me.
It's very possible that some sort of "God" could exist, but I can tell for certain that it has little to do with the pure product of imagination of babilonians, greeks, jews, early christians, muslims, etc. Please consider this.
Good luck in 2012.

@God'swill - Humility can be an extreme challenge when were surrounded by insecure and proud people. Especially among teenagers. I haven't forgot what that was like. Most teenagers haven't matured enough to seek out humility much less attempt to understand it. You are a rare and gifted soul.
Humility does not have to be a lowering of oneself. It is about separating yourself from your image, especially in the eyes of others. When humility is practiced well, the opinions of others hold little importance to you, and ironically, over time, people tend to respect you more. Those who would otherwise be disrespectful will steer away from you when they see that their disrespect has little affect on you.
However, when practicing humility, it is still important to set boundaries and hold firm to them. If certain people are disrespectful to you or choose to take you for granted, spend as little time with those people as possible and spend most of your time with those you can share mutual respect. This doesn't mean that you can not offer kindness to those who are disrespectful, doing so will help to teach them respect, but it should be done on your terms when you feel called to offer it.
I hope that helps, and I wish you the best. You may have a difficult journey, but one that can help you build strong character and principles.
